2.1. Mang nghĩa"yêu cầu thông tin (về ai/cái gì); hỏi"
=to speak or write to someone in order to get information from them/to speak or write to someone because you want them to give you something If you need any help, just ask.

- Với nghĩa này, ask vừa là nội động từ, vừa là ngoại động từ
- ask someone something
- ask (someone) why/how/whether etc
- ask (someone) about something
- ask someone a question
- ask yourself something (=consider it carefully)
- ask (someone) for something
- ask someone’s permission/advice/opinion etc
- ask someone a favour

- I wondered who had given her the ring but was afraid to ask.
- I asked him his name, but he didn’t answer.
- She asked me how I knew about it.
- Did you ask about the money?
- The police wanted to ask us a few questions.
- He ought to ask himself why nobody ever invites him.
- The children were asking for drinks.

2.2. Mang nghĩa"yêu cầu ai cho cái gì hoặc làm gì"
=to expect someone to do something or give you something

- ask something (for something)
- ask a lot/too much
- ask someone (not) to do something
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- It’s a nice house, but they’re asking over half a million pounds.
- It’s asking a lot of teenagers to expect them to see what’s wrong with consumerism.
- All I want is five minutes’ peace and quiet: is that asking too much?
- We ask guests not to smoke in the hotel.
2.3. Mang nghĩa"đòi hỏi ai đó làm gì, trông chờ ai đó làm gì"
=to say that you want something to happen, or that you want someone else to do something

- ask to do something

2.4. Mang nghĩa"mời ai làm gì"
=to invite someone to do something or go somewhere with you

- ask someone to something
- ask someone for something
- ask someone over/round (=to your house)
- ask someone in (=ask someone to come into your house, room, office etc)
- ask someone to do something

- We should ask them for a meal sometime.
