II. Cách dùng"if not"trong tiếng anh
1. Mang nghĩa"bằng không thì, nếu không thì"
=used to talk about the negative result or effect of something/If (something) is not true or not the case.
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- I'll go if you're going - if not, I'd rather stay at home (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Nếu anh đi thì em cũng đi - nếu không thì em thà ở nhà còn hơn)
- Do you want that last slice of pizza? If not, I'll take it.
- Did they call yet? If not, I'll wait to get in the shower.
- I'll go to a movie if you guys want to. If not, I'll probably just go to bed.
- If you've finished, we can have a coffee - if not , you'd better keep working (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Nếu anh làm xong rồi thì chúng ta có thể uống cà phê - bằng không thì anh cứ làm tiếp đi)
- Are you ready ? - If not , I'm going without you (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: Anh sẵn sàng chưa? - Nếu chưa thì tôi đi một mình vậy)
- You should study. If not, you won't pass the test.
2. Dùng để nhấn mạnh, mang nghĩa"nếu không muốn nói là"
=A phrase used to emphasize that something may be even more extreme than originally indicated/You use if to suggest that something might be slightly different from what you are stating in the main part of the sentence, for example that there might be slightly more or less of a particular quality.

- Với cách dùng này, trước & sau if not sẽ cần song song với nhau theo cùng 1 chức năng ngữ pháp (thường là danh từ, tính từ, trạng từ)

- Sometimes, that standard is quite difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. (IELTS TUTOR giải thích: nếu không muốn nói là không thể đạt được)
- I will be ready in a couple of weeks, if not sooner.
- Many, if not most, scientific papers are presented orally at scientific meetings
