1. Cách dùng PREFER
1.1. Prefer sth TO sth: thích cái gì HƠN cái gì
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- Do you prefer hot or cold weather? I prefer red wine to white.
- He prefers watching football to playing it.
Ving thì cũng được tính như NOUN nên ta cũng có 1 cấu trúc nữa: PREFER VING TO VING

- He prefers watching baseball to playing it
1.2. Prefer sth : thích cái gì hơn
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- Some people prefer a vegetarian diet, while others prefer a meat-based diet.
- You can detach the hood if you prefer the coat without it.
- We have tea and coffee, but perhaps you’d prefer a cold drink.
1.3. Prefer (not) to do sth: thích (không) làm việc gì
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
- I'd prefer not to discuss this issue.
- I'd prefer not to work but I don't have much choice.
- Most convalescents prefer to be cared for at home rather than in a hospital.
- Would you prefer to pay by cash, cheque, or credit card?
- Would you prefer to leave?
1.4. Prefer sb (not) to do sth: thích ai đó (không) làm gì

- I'd prefer you not to smoke (= I would like it better if you did not smoke), please.
1.5. Prefer + that + clause (mệnh đề)

2. CÁCH DÙNG HAD BETTER

- Mang nghĩa "NÊN ..."

3. CÁCH DÙNG WOULD RATHER
3.1. Cấu trúc would rather ở thì hiện tại hoặc tương lai
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Mang nghĩa: Thà đang làm gì đó, Thà sẽ làm gì đó (mong muốn ở hiện tại)
Công thức:
- Khẳng định (+): S + would rather (‘d rather) + V (nguyên thể)
- Phủ định (-): S + would rather (‘d rather) + not + V (nguyên thể)
- Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + V

- I'd rather have a beer.
- Which would you rather do - go swimming or play tennis?
- Wouldn't you rather finish it tomorrow?
- He'd rather die than (= he certainly does not want to) let me think he needed help.
- I'd rather not have any mushrooms, thanks.
- I'd rather get a taxi than wait for the bus.
- Would you rather eat now or later?
- I'd rather watch a film with subtitles than one dubbed into English.
3.2. Cấu trúc would rather ở thì quá khứ

- Mang nghĩa: Thà đã làm gì đó
Công thức:
- Khẳng định (+): S + would rather + have + V (quá khứ phân từ)
- Phủ định (-): S + would rather (not) + have + V (quá khứ phân từ)
- Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + have + V (quá khứ phân từ)

- She would rather have spent the money on a holiday. (The money wasn’t spent on a holiday.)
3.3. Cấu trúc ‘would rather than’ và ‘would rather or’

- Làm cái gì ... hơn là cái gì
- Làm cái gì ... hay là ...

- Would you rather eat here or go out?
- Would you rather study or watch TV?
- Would you rather eat dinner out than cook dinner tonight?
3.4. Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ với 2 chủ ngữ
3.4.1. Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai

- Mang nghĩa "Mong muốn ai đó làm gì ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai"
Sẽ lùi thì so với would rather hiện tại ở trên nhé:
Công thức:
- Khẳng định (+): S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + V (quá khứ)
- Phủ định (-): S1 + would rather (that) + S2 + not + V (quá khứ)
- Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + S2 + V (quá khứ)

- She’d rather you didn’t phone after 10 o’clock.
I would rather they did something about it instead of just talking about it. (past simple to talk about the present or future)
Would you rather I wasn’t honest with you? (past simple to talk about the present or future)
3.4.2. Cấu trúc ‘would rather’ ở quá khứ
Công thức:
- Khẳng định (+): S1 + would rather (that) + S2+ had + V (quá khứ phân từ)
- Phủ định (-):S1 + would rather (that) + S2+ hadn’t + V (quá khứ phân từ)
- Nghi vấn (?): Would + S + rather + S2 + had + V (quá khứ phân từ)

- I’d rather you hadn’t rung me at work. (past perfect to talk about the past)
3.5. Much rather: nhấn mạnh
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
I’d much rather make a phone call than send an email.
She’d much rather they didn’t know about what had happened.
