I. Lỗi dùng dấu phẩy ở những câu có 2 mệnh đề (câu ghép)

Câu viết sai:

Viết đúng phải là:
- The number of car users in the UK increased to 30 million, whereas the figure for the US decreased to 20 million.
Quy tắc 2: Khi có những từ and, but, so ở giữa câu, luôn có dấu phẩy giữa 2 mệnh đề.

Câu viết sai:
- There are some causes leading to this problem and some feasible solutions should be taken to prevent this problem.
Viết đúng phải là:
- There are some causes leading to this problem, and some feasible solutions should be taken to prevent this problem.
Quy tắc 3: Khi có những từ since, as, because ở đầu câu, luôn có dấu phẩy giữa 2 mệnh đề.

Câu viết sai:
- Since many people move to cities there are likely to be problems such as traffic congestion or pollution.
Viết đúng phải là:
- Since many people move to cities, there are likely to be problems such as traffic congestion or pollution.
2. Lỗi sử dụng dấu phẩy trong phép liệt kê
IELTS TUTOR lưu ý:
- Khi liệt kê từ ba thứ trở lên, bạn phải đảm bảo mình liệt kê theo đúng quy tắc của parallel structure. Theo đó, bạn chỉ được phép liệt kê toàn bộ hoặc là danh từ hoặc là tính từ,… và trước cái cuối cùng phải có từ “and” và dấu phẩy.
IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:
Câu viết sai:
- We had coffee, cheese and crackers and grapes.
Câu này buộc phải có serial comma dù các thứ được liệt kê ở đây không dài, vì cheese and crackers là 1 món, và grapes là một món nữa, phải thêm dấu phẩy ở trước từ 'and' để người đọc hiểu đây là liệt kê 3 món. Vì vậy, IELTS TUTOR sửa lại là:
- We had coffee, cheese and crackers, and grapes.
